Shaving Bumps

AcnePseudofolliculitis Barbae is a very common condition. You know it better as shaving bumps, and it can affect men and women. What causes it? As your hairs begin to grow back after shaving, waxing or plucking they can get trapped inside your follicles. This causes irritation and swelling, a fact you probably know very well. Not everybody gets bumps, although if you have curly hair you’re more likely to get them.

How do you prevent these bumps? Try an electric razor. If you must use a traditional blade, use a new single-edge blade each and every time you shave. Why? Double- and triple-edged blades grab hair follicles and rip them out from below your skin. Your skin reacts to this ‘attack’ by closing over these holes, making it much harder for future hair follicles to break through. The result? Inflammation that makes shaving bumps.

In any case, make sure to prep the area with warm water and use a rich shaving cream. Always shave with the grain, not against it. After you’re done, apply a mild toner or antibacterial gel.
