Acne Imposters: Epidermal Cysts
Okay, epidermal cysts can be pretty nasty. But the more you know about them the better you'll know how to treat them.
Epidermal cysts are different from those caused by cystic acne. They're sac-like growths buried in the deeper layers of your skin. And they're filled with a soft, whitish material that can remain there indefinitely.
With epidermal cysts size does matter. Smaller cysts (less than 5 mm in diameter) usually don't require treatment. They might be annoying but they are generally harmless. Larger cysts are the bigger problem (so to speak). Their larger size means they have a greater chance of becoming infected, something that is both painful and can lead to scarring.
The bad news is epidermal cysts are often permanent-even if the gunk inside is removed the sac still remains. The good news is such cysts can be permanently removed by getting rid of the sac as well as the stuff inside. Of course, this would involve seeing your dermatologist. (Definitely don't try this at home!)
And remember that while most cysts are typically benign, it's always a great idea to check with your doctor about suspicious lumps and bumps.
