GAIN CONFIDENCE | 90% OF TEENS HAVE IT

Teen Skin and Acne

It's unfair. Just when you're beginning to grow up and get some ideas about who's behind the face in your mirror, you're staring at a minefield of bumps and blemishes. Why do you have it? Your friends don't have it. Only you have it. And no one understands what you're going through. They think, hey, teen skin means teen acne. You'll grow out of it. But the truth is, acne hurts how you feel about yourself, and that's not something you should just ignore. You have a lot of options that can be effective at fighting your acne. So arm yourself with some truths about acne and teen skin.

First off, 90% of teenagers have acne. That means almost everyone you know, online and off. So you aren't alone, even if it feels that way. Guess what else? Celebrities have it, too.  Most of them feel the same way you do about it, and reach for the tube of concealer or try just about everything to treat it, just like you.

Few people talk about it but the truth is, acne can cause you serious emotional issues. You want to look and feel your best, but it's hard when your skin isn't cooperating. Again, you're not alone. Endless research has shown the worst thing about acne is the impact it has on your self-esteem, not what it does to your skin. In fact, a recent study by the American Medical Association revealed (not surprisingly) that acne is one of today's teenagers' biggest worries. "Acne can, without question, affect self-esteem," says Diane Berson, MD, Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology at New York University School of Medicine. Right now, as you're reading this, there are teenagers just like you who think twice before going out because of their acne. It can make you feel lonely, depressed, angry, and upset.

It can be downright depressing, but since everyone has acne, you're supposed to suck it up and suffer through it, right? Wrong! Today we know more about fighting acne than ever before. You can take charge of your acne with treatment options and information (like this site for instance).

And if the feelings get too overwhelming, it's ok to get some help-whether it's your parents, a guidance counselor, therapist, friend, or online support group. Just find someone you can talk to.
