Makeup is supposed to make your skin look better, but every product in the drugstore aisle makes you break out. What’s the deal?

There are tons of foundations and concealers that won’t cause those dreaded blackheads and whiteheads. But it’s super-important your read the labels.

Many cosmetics companies use the term “non-comedogenic” to explain a product won’t clog pores. But what you really want is a product that says “oil-free.” Especially when you’re looking for a foundation or tinted moisturizer.

Lightweight formulations are best, celebrity makeup artist Roy Haidar tells Acne.com. “Using too much foundation will create texture, a mask effect, leading to clogged pores,” Haidar says. “Less is more. Choose a lightweight foundation if you have oily skin.” He also cautions against too much blush!

And foundations aren’t the only offender in the makeup aisle. Some women get tiny pimples around their lips. And that’s often from a product they’re using. “A lot of lip balms are made out of wax, something that a lot of women and men can be either sensitive or allergic to,” Haidar explains. “Avoid lip balms and liners that have wax.” Opt instead for “something with more natural ingredients.”
